Science and sensibility

So, last week when I railed against the fact that "To my knowledge there is not a single botany blog out there" I was actually railing against my own ignorance. It turns out there are quite a number of really quite good blogs out there dealing with matters phytological so here, in no particular order are a few that I've found thanks the comments for that post

Tree Trends (rss)

Tom Kimmerer is well qualified to talk about plants. He has a PhD in Forestry and Botany and spend 18 years as a professor of dendrology - which is enough to make me feel a little queasy that he read my post about trees. His blog covers topics from the intersection of forest and tree biology with human society (trees tend to lose) to invasive pests to keeping and eye on the ID movement and is well worth the read.

Niches (rss)

A blog maintained by Wayne Hughes, and his partner Glenn Galau who both hold doctorates in plant related fields. Which is also enough to make me feel a little queasy that they read my post about trees. The posts are great detailing lots of the animals and plants that make up their 40 acre forested block in Georgia. Check it out, snakes, cats, trees and even pretty weeds!

The World of BotanicalGirl (rss)

As well as being a rather fetching shade of green BotanicalGirl's blog details the trials and tribulations of a second year PhD student. I recently did a summer studendship working with apples, and even though biological predilections and my apple project tend towards the molecular everyone I know now considers me an expert on everything to do with apple breeds and biology. For that reason I loved to read this post

Shoot's Blog (rss)

Part of Treedazzled Shoot's blog charts the successes and the failures of growing trees from seed. In the last few months have had posts on seedlings or seeds from Sierra Junipers, Sugar Pines, Giant Sequoia and Fuschia. The posts are augmented with picture galleries of both seedlings and some nature prepared earlier

Update 5/5: A few more botany blogs have come to my attention. This post actually gets a little bit of traffic from people using google to find botany blogs so I figure it makes more sense to add them to this one than start a new one, so here are the new ones:

Cactus Blog

Now this is what I call a focused blog. The wonderful world of cacti and other succulents complete with photos, news and links. It even includes a recurring feature called "we get questions" in which the authors, Hap Hollibaugh and Peter Lipson answer readers queries. The two also run a cactus nursery, which also has a web presence

UBC botanical garden blog (rss)

The The University of British Columbia has a botanical garden, and that garden has a weblog. And a very good one at that. Their blog links to and provides commentary about a huge variety of topics, and always with a plant biology angle to be examined. climate change, art, plant diseases and conservation are all covered.

UBC botanical garden POTD (rss)

The said same University of British Columbia Botanical garden also keeps a photo of the day archive - which is basically a blog so I'll include it here. Some really great pictures of some really great looking plants and some very good photographs (check out the fairy-slipper orchids) The tagline is pretty awesome: "In science, beauty. In beauty, science. Daily."
